Truth in legislating

I find it a little odd that we as society expect more honesty from PepsiCo than we do from the House of Representatives or the Senate.  PepsiCo did not actually lie, misrepresent, or falsely advertise Aquafina water; they just did not openly disclose that it used a public source.  Aquafina’s label had PWS instead of Public Water Source.  MSNBC.com has a piece from the Associated Press reporting on PepsiCo and other companies that sell bottled water and the deceptive business practices.

A group called Corporate Accountability International has been pressuring bottled water sellers to curb what it calls misleading marketing practices. The group has criticized PepsiCo over its blue Aquafina label with a mountain logo as perpetuating the misconception that the water comes from spring sources.

Letting people falsely believe what they choose to believe is not a crime.  It may not be the most honest and open thing to do, but it is not unethical by Congressional standards; or is it?

Congress has even passed laws about falsely advertising any product; referred to as Truth in Advertising.  You can even get in trouble in our court system if someone happens to misuse your product and gets hurt in the process.  We as Americans tend to get upset when companies don’t tell us the whole truth.  Why we put up with it from our elected officials I do not understand.  Why don’t we get mad when politicians use fancy words and legalese to hide what they really want to accomplish.

Just last month, you heard both sides arguing over the legalization of between 12 to 20 million aliens who have come into this country illegally or have overstayed their visas.  The left and those who are lobbying for our southern border to dissolve have framed the debate as an issue of race.  That it definitely is not.  Those who want to “REFORM”, grants of amnesty, to those GUEST WORKERS, cheap labor that cannot complain about work conditions, have made it absolutely clear that if you stand for enforcing the laws that are already in place you are nothing but a bigot and a racist.  That assessment could not be farther from the truth, and is a very good example of the way that political operatives hide their real intentions behind the rhetoric of deceit and misdirection.

The same goes for all of those bills that have gone through the Senate and House of Representatives that call for “REDEPLOYMENT”, withdrawal, of our troops in Iraq.  Nancy Pelosi says that there is no good news coming out of Iraq.  She does not have a choice but to stay in denial of the truth, because the truth will be devastating to the Democrat party.  Anything other than surrender on the part of the American military is a lose for the left.  If you took the time to actually listen to what those on the left have said about our various strategies in the Iraqi theater of operations, they have all contradicted themselves numerous times.

Early on in the days after major combat operations and the main fighting was done the Democrats said, and rightly so, that we did not have enough troops on the ground.  Many of our Democrat Senators and Representatives demanded that President Bush change strategies and send more troops into the fray.  When the Commander-in-Chief began to listen to what they had been saying, when he began to implement a new course in Iraq the left went absolutely bonkers and demanded that he not send any more of our poor defenseless troops to that Godforsaken place.  It was not about what they thought we needed to do to come away victorious, and everything to do with opposing the other side of the aisle to get my base fired up to get out and vote.

When news of the incident in Haditha, Iraq was reported both the Main Stream Media and the left in Washington D.C. almost jumped for joy.  Rep John Murtha, the supposed former Marine, came right out without any more information than what had been reported by the media and called those Marines on the ground “cold blooded killers”.  He was only one of the many voices in that choir, but his was the voice that made my blood boil.  It did not matter what the actual facts of the matter were or weren’t.  The left needed to get this out as fast as they could in the most negative light that they could shine upon it.  Even now as the charges and evidence fall like guano from the ceiling of the Bat Cave, none of those who convicted those fine Marines before the information was complete, or even had their day in court, will not apologize for their own misconduct.  I guess as a member of Congress you get miles of latitude to be wrong without needing to apologize, but if it was one of our troops who may have saved his platoon by going to the fringes of our Rules Of Engagement the wiggle room is miniscule.

If the press and the public get mad at Pepsico because the public was not smart enough to do a little research into the products that they purchase, what does that really say about the public that is being represented by these lowlife politicians that know that they will not be discovered, by the public anyway.  And if they end up in a news story that same public has a very short memory and will forget about the offense soon enough, just hope that you get caught in the middle of your term.

I know that the Democrats have a person on the payroll to word or phrase new legislation, talking points to make sure that their spin on the issue is less repulsive to Middle America than the Republican side of the issue at hand.  I have not heard of anyone being hired to the same for the Republican Party, although it would not surprise me at all if there was not more than two or three employed per party.  Think about that for a second.  Let that sink in for a minute.  I know one of our political parties, and suspect both parties, employing people to use basic advertising speak and legalese to confuse or put a good face on a bad idea.  It must be a bad idea if you need to think about how you want to actually say what you are trying to say.

I could go on for twenty two more pages with example after example, and then add a few more pages about earmarks and the way that funds are secretly hidden away, so that we don’t find out how are tax dollars are really misspent.  If I wanted to be lied to, mislead, or have fancy reasoning thrown in face about the wrong decisions made in Washington I would have voted for an Ad Agency.
